Top 4 Tips to Ace Your Next Phone Interview

PhoneInterview

In today’s busy world, many companies utilize phone interviews as an initial screening technique.  If you’re on the hunt for a new job, chances are high that at some point you will be asked to participate in a short phone interview with one or several people.  But how do you present your skills, get to know your future employer, and make it to the next step of the interview process when you can’t “wow” them in person? Check out our Top 4 Tips to Ace Your Next Phone Interview.

  1. Prepare like it’s face to face: You wouldn’t walk into an in-person interview without knowing anything about the company you’re wanting to work with.  A phone interview should be no different.  Do your research, compile questions you might want to ask, formulate answers for common questions and be prepared to discuss how your skills and experience will help in this new position.
  2. Dress like it’s face to face: Just because you could participate in a phone interview while in your pajamas, doesn’t mean that you should.  Treat your interview as seriously as you would a face-to-face meeting.  Dress as if you’ll be shaking hands with the hiring manager.  This will increase your confidence and help your professionalism shine through.
  3. Act like it’s face to face: Make sure you are in a quiet, non-disruptive environment for the entirety of your interview with reliable phone service. Shut out distractions and background noises.  Sit up straight at a desk or table.  Have a copy of your resume handy to be able to reference quickly. Make sure you have paper and pen nearby to take notes.  Look for ways to make a connection with the interviewer(s).
  4. End like it’s face to face: Just like you would during an in person interview, ask what the next steps are. Ensure that the interviewer knows you are interested in the position and that you are confident you can fill the role.  Don’t forget to send your interviewer a brief thank-you note on the same day as your call.  Confirm your interest in the company, how your skills and experience make you a great fit and the desire to move on to the next step.

Phone interviews present an interesting challenge since you lack the ability to read your interviewers non-verbal cues.  However, with a little preparation and confidence, you can ace your phone interview and move on to the next round in the hiring process!  So, are you ready for your interview?
